Pinot Gris / Grigio

First grown in Burgundy during the Middle Ages, Pinot Gris (or Pinot Grigio, as the Italians call it) has a distinctive colour, which ranges from pale straw to a pinkish copper, depending on the region it’s from. In Alsace, it is regarded as a noble grape and wines can be as full-bodied and rich as the best of them, to the extent that the very best varieties can even be served with foie gras. Clean with a crisp acidity, this wine is best drunk young though there are some that age well.

Tasting notes: Italian Pinot Grigios tend to be light-bodied with melon and tropical fruit notes while their Alsatian counterparts tend to be more intense, with undertones of spice and honey.

Pairing suggestions: Seafood and white meat dishes go best with light pinot grigios while full-bodied varieties are ideal with spicy or smoked foods.
